 | | As an incoming Space Grant scholar in 2008, Laura Mayorga participated in hands-on research the summer before taking her first UW class. The experience of analyzing infrared images of the surface of Mars cemented her interest in astronomy.

The Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium annually offers scholarships for incoming UW freshmen. Each year some of Washington State's best high school seniors, Running Start, and Early Entrance students vie for a chance to study science, technology, engineering or mathematics at the University of Washington on a Space Grant Scholarship. These competitive scholarships are based on high school academic achievement, standardized test scores, personal essays, recommendations, and future academic promise.
Space Grant scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,500. Scholarships are awarded for one year at a time. Scholarship recipients may apply for award renewal for up to three years, dependent on availability of funding and providing that they maintain program requirements for their majors and
a satisfactory GPA.
The UW Space Grant program is designed to create a small college atmosphere within the larger university. Along with scholarship support, Space Grant scholars can expect these benefits:
- Participation in the Space Grant mentor program which provides each scholar a faculty member or graduate student mentor for academic guidance during their four years at the UW
- Opportunities to gain invaluable hands-on experience doing research in one of the many science or engineering laboratories on campus
- Eligible for Honors Housing
- Assistance with registration, campus resources, and academic advising
- Gatherings with other Space Grant scholars
Requirements
To be eligible for these scholarships, applicants must be Washington state residents and U.S. citizens planning to major in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics discipline at the University of Washington. The Washington NASA Space Grant program values diversity and strongly encourages women and underrepresented minorities to apply.
Matching funds for these scholarships have been generously provided by the Mary Gates Endowment for Students, the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Office of Student Affairs, the Colleges of Arts & Sciences and Engineering, the Louise and Irving R. Donnergaard Endowment, the Sigurd Olsen Endowment, and the Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson Memorial Diversity Endowment.
