WISE CONFERENCE FEB. 3 (9-12+)
The 16th Annual Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Conference, taking place Feb. 3 at University of Washington's South Campus Center, offers high school and community college students a chance to discover to new opportunities, identify personal strengths, and increase overall their confidence, as well as network with both industry and academia professionals.

VISIT VOLCANO WORLD (K-12)
Wherever lava flows or ash spews, Volcano World takes note. A collaborative education project of the North Dakota and Oregon Space Grant Consortia, Volcano World features regular updates on current eruptions and lets you zoom into the locations using Google Earth.
There is also a catalog of charts, photos and records of past eruptions, as well as teaching resources (including instructions for a do-it-yourself model volcano). For more information, go to

MUSEUM OF FLIGHT OPEN HOUSE (K-12)
On Feb. 3, K-12 educators, administrators, and their families can enjoy The Museum of Flight free of charge. Visitors are invited to explore the exhibits, learn about the museum's educational programs, and discover air and space resources, products and programs.
Workshops during which clock-hours can be earned will be available throughout the day. Two new professional development workshops—Project-Based Learning with Robotics and Apollo Moon School Educators—will be offered for clock hours. Workshop space is limited. BIG SOLAR CYCLE PREDICTED
Evidence is mounting: the next solar cycle is going to be a big one. Solar cycle 24, due to peak in 2010 or 2011 "looks like its going to be one of the most intense cycles since record-keeping began almost 400 years ago," says solar physicist David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center.
He and colleague Robert Wilson presented this conclusion at the American Geophysical Union meeting in December. For the whole story, visit

Participant Productions, producers of "An Inconvenient Truth," are giving away 50,000 free copies of the Al Gore global warming documentary. A free teaching guide is also available.
