2008 Washington NASA Space Grant/Jet Propulsion Laboratory Summer Internships

New!2009 JPL interns selected

Biederman in JPL lab
2007 JPL intern William Biederman celebrates the success of his wireless power transfer research project, lighting up 10 100W light bulbs (1kW of power).

Summer internships at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) provide qualified undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to participate directly in cutting-edge research. JPL, managed by the California Institute of Technology, is NASA's lead center for robotic exploration of the solar system.

Located at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains near Pasadena, JPL also manages the worldwide Deep Space Network, which communicates with spacecraft and conducts scientific investigations from its complexes in California, Spain and Australia. Its telescopes observe distant galaxies in the universe to study how our solar system was formed. JPL cameras and sensors are also aboard satellites circling Earth to study the ozone, oceans and other Earth sciences.

Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have completed two years of college or university by June 2009, and be enrolled at a Consortium member institution (Central Washington University, Heritage University, Northwest Indian College, North Seattle Community College, Seattle Central Community College, Seattle University, University of Washington, University of Puget Sound, Washington State University, Western Washington University, Whitman College or Whitworth University).

Applicants must also have a GPA of 3.0 or better and be planning to major in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or science education.

Final selection of summer research associates will be made by scientists and engineers within JPL. The committee will be looking for appropriate matches to the research projects, as well as a variety of unique individual characteristics and interests.

Selection criteria include demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in space, leadership potential, interest in research projects, overall academic quality (honors, awards, GPA, etc.).

Program Dates: June 17-August 21, 2009

Stipend: JPL interns will receive a $6,000 stipend and airfare for travel.

Application: Two copies of the following materials must be submitted to complete the application process:

  • A JPL Summer Internship application form.
  • A current, unofficial copy of your transcripts.
  • A brief biography.
  • Three choices for internships.
  • One letter of recommendation, addressed to Professor Robert Winglee, from an instructor familiar with your course work or prior research experience.
  • A résumé that outlines your skills and relevant activities.

Questions about the JPL Summer Internship should be directed to Space Grant staff by calling (206) 543-1943 or sending e-mail to nasa@u.washington.edu
