WSGC is the office at the University of Washington that administers the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation application at the UW. Undergraduate students going into their junior or senior year who are U.S. citizens and who are majoring in any STEM field — at any campus — should consider applying for this competitive but highly prestigious opportunity.
This scholarship rewards students who are high-performing academic achievers. Applicants must have conducted a considerable amount of work outside the classroom in their chosen field of study. This may include laboratory research, cooperative education, internships, relevant military experience, entrepreneurial endeavors, and/or documented independent work resulting in technical papers, patents, or similar work product.
Submission
Submission requirements are:
- Proof of citizenship
- Personal statement (one page)
- Two letters of recommendation (one letter must be from a faculty member familiar with the student’s work outside of the classroom)
- Current transcripts
- Current resume or CV

All complete applications will then be forwarded to the ASF for consideration. Neither the UW nor WSGC are involved in the selection process.

Founded in 1984 by by the six surviving Mercury 7 astronauts (Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Walter Schirra, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton), Betty Grissom (widow of the seventh astronaut, Virgil “Gus” Grissom), and others, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation annually awards more than 50 scholarships to the brightest and most talented college students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The prestigious Astronaut Scholarship is known nationwide for being among the largest merit-based monetary scholarships awarded to undergraduate STEM juniors and seniors. ASF has a life-long relationship with each Astronaut Scholar and provides them with mentors, professional and personal development and networking with astronauts, C-suite level executives and industry leaders to help advance their careers.
