The 2009 Washington NASA Space Grant Reception and Poster Session, held in Kane Hall at University of Washington on October 2, brought together students from different institutions participating a variety of Space Grant programs.
This year Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium (WSGC) celebrated 20 years of providing research, education and public service programs for the state's learners of all ages. The University of Washington was one of the first designated Space Grant universities in the country.
Former astronaut Bonnie Dunbar — a UW alumna, Space Grant supporter and president of the Museum of Flight, a long-time Space Grant affiliate — gave the welcome. Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise also attended, presenting the 2009 Astronaut Foundation Scholarship award to UW junior Andrew Ishizuka.
Posters were presented by participants in the Space Grant Summmer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP); student interns from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA research centers around the country; a NASA Robotics Academy participant; private industry interns working at Aeroject-Redmond Operations and Tethers Unlimited Inc.
Attendees and posters represented Washington State University, Western Washington University, Whitworth University, Seattle Central Community College and the University of Puget Sound, as well as the University of Washington. Research was conducted by both undergraduates and graduate students.
The annual reception also recognizes Space Grant scholarship recipients and the donors who make these awards possible. In addition to their support from Space Grant, these scholars have receive support from the Louise and Irving R. Donnergaard Endowment, the Sigurd Olsen Endowment, the Lt. Col. Michael P. Anderson Memorial Diversity Scholarship and the Mary Gates Endowment for Students.
