

Stars, Galaxies and the Universe
For teachers, informal educators and community college instructors who work with students in grades 8-14.
This year, Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium will offer two sessions of its popular summer astronomy workshop, one in Seattle and the other in Eastern Washington.
Participants will receive a $150 stipend for attending the workshop. Two University of Washington credits of Astronomy 499 or 23 clock hours from WSTA or NCESD will be available for purchase.

Day 1
9 a.m.-noon Basic properties of stars
Noon-1:30 p.m. Lunch
1:30-5:00 p.m. Young stars to old: principles of stellar evolution
8:00-11:00 p.m. Stars in action: the night sky
Day 2
9:00 a.m.-noon New tools and old: studying stars and galaxies with Hubble, Chandra and Spitzer
Noon-1:30 p.m. Lunch
1:30-5:00 p.m. Basic properties of galaxies
6:30-8:30 p.m. Star and galaxy flicks
Day 3
9:00 a.m.-noon Modeling the universe
Noon-1:30 Lunch
1:30-3:30 p.m. Dark matter and dark energy in an expanding universe
Snacks will be provided but no meals. Participants who live more than 40 miles from Wenatchee or Seattle may apply for an extra $150 to defray their attendance costs.
