2010 Washington Space Grant Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)
Information for Faculty
2010 Faculty Request Forms are now available.
University of Washington faculty conducting research in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are invited to participate in our 2010 Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP).
Now in its 17th year, Space Grant SURP identifies capable students and matches them with professors conducting research related to the student's field of interest. Each faculty-student team will agree on a summer project that presents a meaningful learning experience for the student and contributes to the faculty member's research efforts.
Faculty may request part-time or full-time student researchers. Part-time positions carry a time commitment of approximately 20 hours per week; full-time positions require a commitment of approximately 40 hours per week.
Participating faculty are responsible for providing funding for half of their SURP student's stipend.
|
Part-time researchers will be awarded a stipend of $2,000 for the nine-week program; full-time researchers will be awarded a stipend of $4,000. Stipends will be disbursed throughout the nine-week period.
The faculty contribution to the stipend may be from a research grant to an individual faculty member, a department, or other sources. The other half will be paid by the Space Grant Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). Space Grant
staff will work with each faculty mentor's department to complete the
paperwork for SURP student stipends.
Program Dates: June 21- August 20, 2010
Research Schedule: Each faculty member-student team will develop a schedule that fits their particular time constraints and project needs.
Stipend rates: Part-time researchers will be awarded a stipend of $2,000 for the nine-week program; full-time researchers will be awarded a stipend of $4,000. Stipends will be disbursed throughout the nine-week period.
Faculty will contribute $1,000 per part-time student researcher and $2,000 per full-time student researcher.
Program Requirements for Students:
- Attendance at the SURP orientation meeting on June 21
- Responsible adherence to the schedule of work set up between student and research adviser
- A written project abstract due at the end of the first week of the program
- Semimonthly project updates
- Attendance and participation in a weekly two-hour seminar meeting
- A 10-minute presentation to seminar participants on the student's research

SURP students will display their posters at a reception held during Fall Quarter and will apply for acceptance to the campus-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium the following spring.
Application Process:
Each year we receive applications from students studying in all areas of science, math and engineering. Students apply to the program through a competitive application process.
Faculty wishing to participate are asked to fill out and submit the online Faculty Request Form or print it out and mail the completed form to the Space Grant Office, Box 351310 on or before April 16, 2010. You may also send the information in an e-mail to nasa@u.washington.edu with subject line SURP Faculty.
We will send you student applications to consider for your research project after the student application deadline of April 16, 2010.
Faculty members currently working with a student may request that particular student on the Faculty RequestForm. Student participants must be U.S. citizens.
The requested student must also complete an application. It will be up to the faculty members to interview and select students.
