Washington NASA Space Grant is pleased to invite undergraduates from the University of Washington to apply for competitive awards to support their research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.
These research scholarships are made directly to students and enable them to concentrate on research activities that supplement their academic coursework and help to prepare them for careers in NASA-related fields. Students doing research with faculty in all fields of science and engineering, as well as science education, are eligible.
Awards:
Students may apply for $3,000 grants for research to be undertaken during the project period. Students may request: a) $3,000 in funding for full-time research during summer 2006; or b) two installments of $1,500 in funding for part-time research during two academic quarters. Funding for the second installment will depend on satisfactory progress noted on faculty and student mid-project evaluation forms.
Eligibility: As of January, 2006, the awards are open
only to undergraduate students in good academic standing enrolled
full time at the University of Washington.
Student research projects must be in a field of science, engineering, or other area related to NASA's missions on Earth and in space. They must be carried out under close guidance from a faculty member. Student researchers should spend a minimum of 10 hours per week on their projects during the academic year and 20-30 hours per week during the summer.
Application Deadline:
The application deadline is February 27, 2006. Applications must be postmarked on or before this date to be considered for this year's awards. Awards will be announced April 3, 2006. All applicants will be notified by mail.

Review:
A committee will review your application, examining your essay for evidence of the nature, extent and quality of your research activities, the role you play in this research, and your ability to carry out the project given the resources available to you. In particular, committee members will look for evidence of the contribution of your research experience to your learning. This learning can be reflected in a number of ways, including evidence of your developing knowledge, skills, and understandings, and evolving values and goals.
Space Grant Scholars:
If you receive an undergraduate research award, you will be named a Space Grant Scholar. As a requirement of this award upon completion of your project you will be expected to present your work in a public exhibit in a poster format (time and place TBA) and submit a written end-of-project report. As part of the long-term assessment of this program, we also ask you to maintain a current address and student or employment status on file with the Washington Space Grant office.
